New Regulation for the use of generic descriptors

On September 20th 2013, Regulation 907/2013 was published setting the rules for applications concerning the use of generic descriptors (denominations).
Pursuant to Article 1(4) of Regulation 1924/2006 specific generic descriptors (denominations) which have traditionally been used to indicate a particularity of a class of foods or beverages which could imply an effect on health may be exempted from the application of that Regulation following an application by the food business operators concerned.
For instance product names such as "digestive biscuits" or "cough drops" are traditionally used with no implication of an effect of consumers' health. According to the Regulation, generic descriptors (denominations) should correspond to a period of at least 20 years proven usage within the Member State(s) prior to the date of entry into force of this Regulation.
