Two Gourmet theatres and two new traditional Viennese eateries: one serving up grandma style classics, the other adding a modern twist to old favourites – there's plenty happening on Vienna's dynamic restaurant scene.
A new gourmet temple opens its doors on October 25, 2013 – Reinhard Gerer’s teatro. Gerer’s illustrious career has taken him from the Korso restaurant at Hotel Bristol to Magdalenenhof and Gourmet-Theater Palazzo. His latest project combines the Viennese spirit with the charm of international variety theatre in an exquisite four-course menu. A revue including magic, comedy and acrobatics is served up alongside delicacies such as potatoes with Mangalitsa bacon and scallops, venison on white polenta, and a trilogy of fine dark chocolates. teatro’s art nouveau interior is a veritable palace of mirrors.
Late October also sees the opening of Toni Mörwald Palazzo. Star chef Mörwald follows in the footsteps of Reinhard Gerer who headed Vienna’s Gourmet-Theater Palazzo from 2003. Mörwald’s menus are centred on regional cuisine and top-quality produce, and the evening’s entertainment comes courtesy of a brand new show entitled “heartbreakers and thrills”. Like Gerer’s teatro, art nouveau decor and countless mirrors make for an unforgettable atmosphere at Palazzo.
Labstelle welcomed its first diners in summer 2013. Located on a pedestrian passage in the heart of the city, this new 70-seat restaurant serves traditional Viennese cuisine with a contemporary touch. The ingredients are sourced exclusively from regional producers, including vegetables from a grower in the city and goat’s cheese from the Wienerwald area. And Labstelle bakes six types of bread in house. A bar with 45 seats offers a selection of Austrian wines, as well as live DJ performances. Housed in a former plumber’s store in the fourth district,Zur Herknerin opened for business in July 2013. Chef Stefanie Herkner has put together a menu of classics such as Griessnockerlsuppe (soup with semolina dumplings), goulash and stuffed cabbage – just like mom and grandma used to make!
